39. If my house burnt down...
Standing here I look out of the sparkling window to survey the beautiful day. The rays of the spring sun are shining down, touching the horizon and the tops of trees. I just want to go out and play, I can imagine it, riding my bike with the wind being whipped at my face but I can't, I'm not allowed. Someone is coming to our humble abode and mom wants me to look outstanding and not get filthy from outside. She is cooking, smells of a bakery fill our home. I look back out the window. Confusion fills me, it was a very admirable day before, why is it so dark now? What's that bitter odor captivating my nose? Suddenly, mom drops the tray, food goes everywhere. She is screaming at us to get out. The house is on fire! Panic fills me and my siblings. How did this happen? Hearing the piercing cry of my one year old brother brings me back to reality. I grab him and hold him tight, I am so afraid to let go. My mom hands me the phone and tells me to get out, she has to go get my sisters. I see my favourite toy, it's just laying there waiting for someone to play with it. It was a birthday present for my fourth birthday in November. I snatch it up. Cradling it to my chest with my brother. Slamming the room doors closed as fast as we can, we run downstairs. My sister runs out after my mom, they don't have shoes on. Looking at my other sister, we take the shoes, as many as we need for the five of us. It took less than a minute for our world to be turned upside down. How long until it goes back to normal? My mom took the phone from me, and called 911, we didn't have to wait long because the neighbours had already phoned. I stood there looking at the house, a monster was consuming my home, eating it as if it had been starving for months, years and nothing could stop it. The flames licking the walls as if they were satisfied by ruining this peaceful day. I stand here wishing I had gotten my bike so I could ride far far away. Away from the wails, away from the destruction.
